Top 10 Must Have Makeup for Women of Color!

Writer's picture: Kamille WalkerKamille Walker

Shoutout to all my dark beauties out there! I am here for ALL my beautiful women, no matter what race, but I want to give extra love to my melanin babes! Don’t let anyone dim that melanin light!

I have a huge appreciation for makeup, whether it’s a full beat face, or a natural glowing look. You will almost always catch me watching a Jackie Aina or Alissa Ashley video while doing my makeup. As a woman of color, it’s definitely a mission to find the right foundation, concealer, and powder that matches our skin tone. It also sucks when you have this incredibly colorful eyeshadow palette and one swatch has you looking like someone tested new Crayola chalk on your skin. It’s 2020 and some of the top makeup brands out there are still slacking in providing quality products for women of any color! Let’s look at some FIRE makeup products that I think are great for my beauties!

10: Morphe eyeshadow palettes $12.00-$30.00

Don't come for me, I tried my best to clean the palettes! In my opinion, Morphe’s eyeshadows can really look beautiful on dark skin if you know how to apply it.The pigmentation is there, but if you really want it to pop, then here’s a quick tip: spray your brush with setting spray before adding the eyeshadow, and then apply! There will definitely be a difference in pigment!

9: Juvia’s Place Blush (color: Bella) $8.00

You’re going to hear me talk about Juvia’s Place a lot in this post, soooo I’m not sorry! Juvia’s Place is a black owned brand created by Chichi Eburu, and these products aim to satisfy not only women of color, but women of all races. I was first introduced to this blush by a makeup artist who did my makeup for an award show 2 years ago. I promise you that before then, I never used blush. This will give your cheeks the love and depth it needs. It's a powdered blush that gives your cheeks a soft rosy-orange glow!

8: Juvia’s Place Magic mini palette $25.00

Let’s talk about pigmentation again….Juvia’s Place eyeshadow palettes are where it’s at! I am obsessed with how pigmented all of their colors are, from their shimmers to their mattes. No matter what skin tone you have, their colors will complete your desired look. So play around with a soft brown everyday look, or spice it up with some electric blue!

7: NYX Bare With Me Hydrating Jelly Primer $14.00

Stop! Let me save you some money! You know the Milk Hydro Grip that runs for $30? Well let me introduce you to the NYX Bare With Me jelly primer, the amazing dupe for the hydro grip. It has the same jelly texture and tacky finish so your foundation will stay! It’s a hydrating primer, but I believe this can benefit both dry and combination skin (I have combination skin). Now for the best part….it’s only $17!! Please consider purchasing and then let me know what you think!

6: NYX Lingerie liquid lipstick (color: Lipli) $7.00

Who can agree that it’s a whole mission to find the right nude lipstick? NYX is known for their wide range of lipstick shades, and I love this color for a nice everyday nude. It adds a little brown tint to give your lips a bit of color. You can even top it with your favorite lip gloss for a little pop (I need to stop with that word!).

5: Juvia’s Place Loose Highlighter (color: Nubia) $14.00

Had to add flash for this one….LOOK AT THAT GLOW! I will admit, I am not a huge fan of loose highlighters because it can get messy, but this highlighter has me hooked! With a mixture of shimmer gold and bronze, it will complete your look with that kissed by the sun radiance!

4: Sephora Collection Contour Blush Palette $29.00

If your makeup look is lacking that warmth in bronzer and highlight, then this is a great product for that quick fix! What I love about this is that the blushes can work well as a highlighter too! This is a great product to keep in your purse if you need a quick glam touch up.

3: Fenty Pro Filt’r Setting Powder $32

Alright ladies, say goodbye to oily spots and flashback! The Fenty setting powder is not only good for setting your foundation and concealer without making you look ashy, but it’s also a great product to use as a primer. I know it sounds weird, but trust me! I have a tutorial post about that coming soon! Rihanna, keep it coming girl!

2: Fenty Pro Filt’r soft matte longwear foundation (color:420) $35

This is my second favorite foundation! First, thank you Rihanna for providing us with 50 shades to choose from! Second, this foundation will make you feel and look like you are wearing nothing. It is a liquid matte foundation that truly lives up to the “pro filter” name. Trust me, you won’t be needing a filter when wearing this foundation!

1: Juvia’s Place I Am Magic Foundation ($20.00) and Concealer ($14.00)

Number 1....These products right here are my holy grail. Not only does the foundation make your skin look flawless with no effort, but you can match up to about 3 different shades. I match up to the shades 240, 300, and 310. This can depend on the season we’re in, but it’s insane how the color blends perfectly with my skin; and will last all day! The concealer is a great dupe for the Tarte Shape Tape concealer too! This liquid foundation is more matte, but they do have foundation sticks that cater to dry skin. I promise you guys that I will be sponsored by Juvia’s Place one day!

It’s so important to do your research on makeup products before buying it! Just because your favorite makeup guru makes a video on it, does not mean that it’s a for sure fit for you! I wanted to share some of my favorite makeup brands and products for women of color, but I do want everyone to do their own research on these products before jumping and buying them! Now, don’t think this is only for my women of color, I would love if all my beauties found any of this information to be helpful! Feel free to head to the connect page if you have a question or comment! I would love to hear from ALL of YOU. Nice ending right?
